Heartbreak for Goulburn Valley orchardists - ABC Shepparton - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Heartbreak for Goulburn Valley orchardists - ABC Shepparton - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Sadly the rest of Australia's fruit canneries appear to be going the same way as Mountain Maid (see my previous post)

Here is a news item about the orchardists from Shepparton who are having to plough in their fruit trees, some of them almost 100 years old.

It doesn't matter that Australia's population is growing. People are choosing to buy cheap imported food instead of the home grown stuff. And because our dollar is so high compared to the US dollar, our export industry is up the creek as well.

So if you can read the label next time you are at the supermarket and choose only Australian grown tinned fruit and veg when you have a choice you'll be doing a farmer a favour. If it says "Made in Australia from local and imported ingredients" put it back on the shelf.
